Resumo
O presente artigo trata-se da história da implementação e utilização do lítio na medicina moderna. Ao longo do texto, faz-se um relato histórico desde a descoberta do mineral, até a sua aceitação como potencial terapêutico para o tratamento da mania e transtorno bipolar. Ao final, abordam-se as propriedades farmacológicas e toxicológicas disponíveis, além de outras informações relevantes à terapêutica, como interações medicamentosas e efeitos adversos.
